IQA World Cup 2020 to be held in Richmond, United States

Mar 5, 2019 | Events

The International Quidditch Association is proud to announce the location of the IQA World Cup 2020. After a vote by the Assembly of Members in which all 18 full member NGBs have participated, Richmond, Virginia, United States, has been chosen to host the event with 10 out of 18 votes, while Getxo, Spain received 7 votes and 1 NGB abstained. World Cup 2020 will be co-hosted by the IQA, Richmond Region Tourism, US Quidditch, and Major League Quidditch. The exact dates will be announced in a couple of months, but the event will be mid to late July 2020.

While the Board congratulates US Quidditch for the result, we also want to thank Asociación Euskadi Quidditch for the amazing work with their bid.

I couldn’t be more excited to announce that Richmond will be hosting the 2020 Quidditch World Cup” said Events Director Pauline Raes. “This cycle had some strong bids, and I can’t wait to see the latest edition of our marquee tournament come to fruition. I’d like to thank everyone involved in this process, from bidding parties and National Governing Bodies, to IQA volunteers and the wider community – together we’ll make 2020 a year that will never be forgotten”.

Sports tourism continues to make a significant impact on the region’s economy” said Jack Berry, Richmond Region Tourism President & CEO. “We’re thrilled the International Quidditch Association has chosen the region to host the IQA World Cup 2020 and we can’t wait to welcome some of the best quidditch athletes from around the world to the Richmond region next year”.

We are overjoyed to be hosting IQA World Cup and are excited to work on another international quidditch tournament with Richmond Region Tourism” commented Sarah Woolsey, USQ Executive Director.

We will be working with US Quidditch to organize the event and keep you posted with further information in order to make the journey to Richmond as pleasant and easy to organize as possible.

The decision-making process has not been easy and the Board shares the sentiment that this was far from the ideal procedure. While we remain confident in our decision to engage NGBs in this case, the Board will work to ensure a more linear one next time.

Tickets will go on sale later this year.
