Meet the IQA

Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees is responsible for managing the IQA. The board may exercise all powers granted to the IQA and perform all lawful acts equired by the affairs of the IQA, so long as the exercise of such powers and the doing of such acts are consistent with the IQA’s purposes. The board shall have ultimate authority over the business, policies, affairs, and activities of the IQA.

Fun Fact: Kym has over 50 animals including 2 dogs, 6 chickens, a turtle, a bearded dragon, a ball python, and an unknown number of fish, snails, and shrimp.

Alex co-founded the IQA and US Quidditch and helped Xander Manshel develop the original rules to real-life quidditch in 2005. He has served as a board member for both organizations, as well as USA Dodgeball. Alex is currently the Vice President of Innovation for CircusTrix, parent company of Sky Zone and other active entertainment brands.

Fun Fact: If you thought inventing quidditch was the nerdiest thing Alex has done you would be mistaken – he also builds and paints Warhammer models.

I am a teacher in NSW, Australia. I have been playing quidditch for 9 years now but I also enjoy playing basketball and helping out with plays and musicals.

Fun Fact: I lived in NZ for 18 years but I have only ever played quidditch in Australia.

Volunteers

Like any volunteer-based organisation, our volunteers are the lifeblood of the IQA. Split into 4 broad departments, our volunteers make everything the IQA do possible. From translating rulebooks and managing our technology stack, to organising our flagship tournaments and working with our members, to the nuts-and-bolts work of the legal and operations teams, to improving the way Quidditch is played through rulebooks and raising the standards of officiating with resources for referees. Lore is a social creative from Belgium, playing in the United Kingdom with the Werewolves of London. She teaches at university and high school, where she lectures her students strategic communications through quidditch examples. She also has a strong focus on political communication, where her skills in strategic communication come to play.

Fun Fact: Lore also teaches presentation training, but her main advice is "don't prepare at all!" (Not to be taken seriously, always prepare!)

Fun Fact: When helping to test the IQA referee website, I did over a dozen referee tests in one weekend to find the reason for an issue. At least I got quite efficient after a while.

Rahel Liviero portrait

Former IQA Trustee, Vice-President Swiss Quidditch Association

Rahel has been involved in quidditch volunteering since its beginning in Switzerland in 2017. First as a founding member of Pilatus Patronus, later on as Vice-President for the Swiss Quidditch Association. Rahel has been the tournament director of the Swiss championship and team manager of the national team for the past several years. Rahel’s debut as an international volunteer was first as the Swiss delegate to the IQA and as an IQA volunteer in 2018 before being elected to the IQA Board of Trustees in 2019 for a three-year term that recently expired. Off-pitch, Rahel works for a compliance and regulatory service provider specialized in trusts and non-profits and as a university tutor. Rahel holds a bachelor degree in business law and is currently finishing up a second bachelor degree in gender studies and anthropology.

IQA Trustee 

Chris has been an active volunteer in the quidditch community since 2018, when he started the “Fly for Equality” Project in the University of Hong Kong to promote quidditch and subsequently co-founded the Hong Kong Quidditch Association with other passionate Hong Kong quidditch players. Chris was elected as an IQA Trustee in 2021, with wide support from the NGBs in the Asia-Pacific region. Chris is currently a trainee solicitor in the technology, media, and telecommunications team at the Hong Kong office of an international law firm.

Pauline Raes

IQA Events & Membership Services Director

Pauline started playing quidditch at the end of 2014 and started volunteering shortly after that. Pauline has held various volunteer roles in the Belgian Quidditch Federation, local teams, the Quidditch Premier League and the IQA. She joined the IQA in the World Cup 2016 organizing committee and has been the IQA Gameplay Director and Events Director. She served on the IQA Board of Trustees from 2019 until her term ended this February. Currently Pauline is the IQA Events and Membership Services Director. She works for the Belgian Government Internal Affairs in administration.

IQA Events & Membership Services Deputy Director

Luke has been playing and organizing quidditch since 2010. After founding the program at the University of Minnesota, he went on to volunteer with several quidditch organizations over the years. His roles have included Midwest Regional Director for US Quidditch, Events Director for Major League Quidditch, and now Events & Membership Services Deputy Director for the International Quidditch Association. In June 2021, Luke graduated with his Sports Business MBA from the University of Oregon and now lives in Portland, where he works in sports tourism for the Washington County Visitors Association.

Ariadna L. Navone Sarubbi

Former BIPOC Committee Member and Social Media & Community Engagement Manager

Ariadna started playing quidditch in 2014 in Rosario, Argentina and first volunteered with the IQA in 2020 as a member of the Bipoc Committee. She subsequently volunteered in the IQA’s translation team and the social media and community engagement team, where she is currently the lead. She is a co-founder, writer and editor of La Snitch Informativa, the leading Spanish language quidditch website, covering the development of the sport in Latin American countries and Spain. She has a degree in Social Communication and works as a professor at the university and local high schools. Ariadna also organized the first Harry Potter event in Argentina and created the first podcast about Harry Potter in Argentina.

Matt Bateman

Originally from New Zealand, Matt has been involved in the sport at every level since 2015. He joined QuidditchUK as Vice President in mid 2017, and then was appointed as President in 2019 leading the UK governing body for the last 3 years. Since his Presidency he has overhauled the university and community landscape of the sport, established several key partnerships, and rebuilt QuidditchUK into a professional organization through recruitment and strategy - keeping the sport afloat throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and bringing the sport to an important step of its first paid employee as of May 2022.

Emma (aka Jandels) has been an active member of the quidditch community since 2015. She’s played in four countries (New Zealand, Australia, England and Scotland) and has worn multiple hats in that time such as coach, commentator, national team manager, board executive, assistant tournament director, head referee and consultant as well as having professionally worked for Enrich Education in their Youth Quidditch program. Her deep knowledge of all these roles across many different administrative levels of quidditch gives her a broad insight into how the name change will impact all these areas of the sport. Her experience working in operations and business development in the London tech start-up scene will bring the “get it done” attitude to push this project over the finish line. She currently lives in Edinburgh.

Andy Marmer

Former IQA Trustee and Former IQA Interim Executive Director

Andy has been involved in quidditch volunteering since 2013, when he joined the then-IQA, now USQ as its editorial manager.  Since that time Andy has served in various quidditch volunteering roles, including founding and leading the Quidditch Post from 2014 until 2017.  Andy served as a member of the IQA board of trustees from 2017 until 2019 and served as interim executive director during that period.  Andy is a practicing attorney at the international law firm of Willkie Farr & Gallagher where he practices corporate law, specializing in mergers & acquisitions and lives in the New York area.  He is the new father of a beautiful baby daughter, Julia Madison, born January 25, 2022
